The Day Claude AI Informed Me I’m a UK Size 16 (And Other Delusions I’m Currently Processing)

There are days when life flows with quiet grace. You wake up, sip your functional botanical tea, do a little box breathing, stretch out on the reformer, and feel reasonably put together as a functioning adult.

And then there are days when you consult an AI tool to help design a sizing structure for your activewear brand, feed in your exact 3D body scan measurements, and you ask in trepidation:

“Can you check again if this body scan is really telling me I'm a UK 16 because I've been wearing UK 12-14 all my adult life?”

Wait. What?

Hold the phone. Rewind the tape. What the actual f@#k?!

According to the cool, unfeeling, mathematical algorithm of Claude AI, my body is not the comfortable UK 12/14 I have spent years assuming it is while squeezing into standard activewear bands. No, no. In the digital universe of precise measurements, I am a solid, undeniable UK 16.

I sat there staring at the screen in utter shock, mild horror, and pure disbelief.

How has this happened? Have I been living in a alternate universe where vanity sizing lied to me? Have all my clothes been secretly woven from high-octane elastane, holding on for dear life while whisper-singing "We're fine, everything is fine"? Why has no one—not my mirror, not my husband, not my friends—ever pulled me aside over coffee and said, "Darling, we love you, but you’re navigating life in the wrong label size"?

The immediate post-revelation brain is a hilarious, irrational place. Within thirty seconds flat, I went from feeling like a healthy, functional woman to exercises every single day to feeling like the actual size of a hippo.

(Now, let me publicly apologize to hippos worldwide: you are magnificent, majestic, and undeniably cute. But I was not planning on channeling your glorious, thick-skinned silhouette when picking out my weekend wardrobe!)

The irony of this entire moment, of course, is that I am currently designing a line of activewear built specifically against the tyranny of traditional sizing. A brand created to honor women's real bodies, real midlife transitions, and real proportions without the emotional baggage of arbitrary numbers. We were literally brainstorming code names like Velvet, Silk, Jade, and Positano so women would never have to stare at a Soul-Crushing Standard Size Tag ever again!

And yet, there I was, getting completely side-swiped by the very standard number I’m trying to revolutionize.

If this humbling little AI reality check proved anything, it’s that:

  1. Tape measures have no chill. Algorithms do not care about your feelings, your posture, or how nice your linen trousers look.

  2. Clothing sizes are a absolute fiction. Sizing scales across brands are pure chaotic energy

    anyway.

  3. We desperately need better options. If an arbitrary number can make a grounded woman suddenly feel like a floating parade balloon, then the traditional fashion industry has failed us completely.

So, am I a "UK 16" according to the bots? Apparently so. Am I going to let a digital tape measure dictate how I feel in my own skin today? Absolutely not. (Right after I finish double-checking the stretch capacity of my favorite leggings).

Here’s to real bodies, accidental reality checks, and standard sizes that belong firmly in the bin!
